Julio Mendoza Loor made history when taking the first-ever gold medal for Ecuador in the individual Dressage Freestyle finale at the Pan American Games in Quillota, Chile today.

Partnering the 12-year-old chestnut gelding Jewel’s Goldstrike, the 44-year-old who hails from his country’s capital city of Quito and who has been based in North Carolina, USA in recent years posted a massive score of 87.230 for victory.

Brazil’s João Victor Marcari and Feel Good VO claimed silver medal spot on 86.160 and USA’s Anna Marek and Fire Fly clinched bronze when last to go, posting a score of 81.305.

There were two individual slots on offer for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to National Federations in the region on this last day, and Ecuador’s Loor and Chile’s Svenja Grimm who finished eighth with Doctor Rossi, have earned those for their respective countries.
